Most Depressing Gaming Trip Ever

My Car! by The Gonk
My Car!, a photo by The Gonk on Flickr.
We headed over to Mik's to try out some Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3.0. We'd had some thunderstorms throughout the day, nothing major, and it was raining pretty hard while we started generating characters. Then my wife called and said she and the kids were sheltering in the bathroom! Typical overreaction from a wife, huh? I'm trying to get my game on, and she's calling me freaking out over a little rain. She calls me a second time, and I ask her what she wants me to do? I can't do anything about the weather!! Shortly after that, we hear the rain noticeably start to escalate. Then, the "tack tack tack" of hail. Then, "THUDTHUDTHUDTHUDTHUD!!!! I never heard that before!! We open the door and there is a carpet of big hail stones outside. I stick my hand it in, get hit by a few small ones, then WHAP get a big one that HURT BADLY and left a nice bruise. And I'm thinking, "Yeah, that would have dented a car..." More than dented, my car was absolutely crushed. We called the game and I went home to apologize to my wife!! We wound up with golf ball sized hail and it was indeed a pretty scary situation after I got home. I am covered by insurance for the damage to this and the relatively minor damage to the house-- nothing at all to complain about when over 250 people died.

  1. Good lord! How's the hand? Hope it wasn't your paintin' hand :)

Being from then orthwest it's hard to fathom weather that can hurt you directly. Sure we have flood damage and wind storms that knock things over from time to time, but not direct projectiles from the heavens.

  2. Dude,

Happy to hear that a smashed up car was the worst of it. I was following those storms yesterday and thinking of you guys in Knoxville. Being from Texas, I know first hand exactly what a line of really bad thunderstorms can throw out.

    Stay safe.

  3. I don't know to say, I've lived here my whole life and have never seen anything like last night. I'm sorry about your car chief, but like you said, we got off pretty easy comparatively.

  4. Eli, good point, it was indeed my paintin' hand. Next time I willfully do something stupid and painful, I'll make sure to use my off hand. ;-)

  5. Keep an eye on your attic spaces too guys. We had a monster hailstorm like that in Texas and the leaks in our roof didn't show up for a few weeks.

  6. Not to be a total downer Andy, but my Brother in law Steve loss his uncle to the tornadoes in Greeneville. (For those that follow the MotMM podcast, that is Greeneville, CA.)

Between losing a back window and losing a love one, I think you would happily accept the first.

  7. Aside from the hail,

What do you think of WFRP 3rd Edition?

I think it looks pretty cool and the card system is interesting. I have all of the books and sets, but I haven't sat down with players and played it yet.

  8. I didn't have any problems with what I saw, but we didn't get very far along and haven't had a chance to get back into it since.
