Back up!
In case you're wondering, I've been locked out of this blog for the last month, which is why you haven't been seeing any updates! I finally got around to identifying the problem and correcting it (an unrelated security update must have changed the database libraries to an incompatible version, and I could no longer log in or even extract the data in a raw form). Anyway, I THINK things are back to normal. If you find any problems, just add a comment here or e-mail me at andy@cowell.org. Thanks.

Septemeber 11 Anniversary
I don't dwell on the WTC attack much anymore, so I've spent the better part of today being surprised at just how furious I still am over it. You can see a great editorial cartoon about the anniversary at Cox & Forkum, mirrored below, and read a great article about the event from James Lileks:
Ive no doubt that if Seattle or Boston or Manhattan goes up in a bright white flash there will be those who blame it all on Bush. We squandered the worlds good will. We threw away the opportunity to atone, and lashed out. Really? You want to see lashing out? Imagine Kabul and Mecca and Baghdad and Tehran on 9/14 crowned with mushroom clouds: thats lashing out. Imagine the President in the National Cathedral castigating Islam instead of sitting next to an Imam who's giving a homily. Mosques burned, oil fields occupied, smart bombs slamming into Syrian palaces. We could have gone full Roman on anyone we wanted, but we didnt. And we wont.
Which is why this war will be long.
Modern Africa Yahoogroups
A new Yahoo group has started, AK47Campaigns, devoted to Peter Pig's AK-47 rules. Sounds interesting, although I don't care much for the system. Check out the longstanding Wargaming_Africa list if you're interested in modern Africa.

It Just Doesn't Pay Sometimes
I'm currently painting 15mm Battle Honors Napoleonic Austrians. I'm working hard to make them nice. I snipped off the cast standard and replaced it with brass wire. I resculpted the bearer's hands and finial. I lovingly painted the miniature. I rescaled the appropriate standard from Napflags, printed it out and attached in, waving in the breeze in an energetic manner. I gloss urathaned the miniature to protect it, then a coat of Dullcote for sheen. Then, yes, I see that I've mounted the firkin' flag upside down. I think I'm just going to leave it.

PolyUrethane Spray Protection?
I bought a can of polyurethane spray to use on my miniatures. My thought was that if, as I believe, the miracle dip process provided more protection, perhaps the same could be achieved on non-dipped figures by using spray urethane. I bought gloss, and plan to cover with my usual Dullcote to control the sheen. Has anybody tried this before? I'll follow up with a report after I try it. Update: Quick answer: Yes.
