Play By Email Miniatures

The Rattrap Productions forums have sections for Play by EMail (PBEM) sessions of their games. Looking through the Fantastic Worlds section, I think they look like a lot of fun, and I almost got in on the last one-- but who am I kidding, I don't have time for that. I am looking forward to getting the new FW supplement, Planet X: Terror From Across the Universe.

  1. Never really saw the point of PBEM miniatures games. If the face-to-face contact was not a valuable part of the experience for me, I'd just play WoW or something.

  2. I have loved GURPS for many, many years, but nobody I play with really cares. So, I finally got into an online game, and am able to really experience the rules. If I just wanted to waste time, I could play WoW, but that's not really what I'm doing.

  3. RPGs are a different beast. The activity is mostly in the mind anyway and the goal is to get an immersion such that the words are all the characters words anyway. So in that scheme, email/chat seems perfect. You can send out your "characters words" and save things like "I need another coke" for off line. With miniatures games the interactions with the other participants (at least in the groups I enjoy) are often more conversational and often tangential or completely irrelevant to the actual game.
As long as you are having fun, that's the only thing that really matters...
